This auction is for a scarce ALL ORIGINAL and RARE example of a men’s ca 1910’s “WALTHAM” timepiece. The case has ornately carved detailing on the front and back bezels, side.

This beautiful a manual wind timepiece features an ORIGINAL handsome double sunk white porcelain enamel dial with POWER RESERVE is in good condition, but with several hairlines. It is featuring a 60 minute outer track border, original blue steel Spade-style hands, black enamel Arabic numbers and two sub-dials: a recessed sunken sub-seconds dial with “sweep” original blue steel seconds hand and 60 second outer chapter and sunken sub-dial with POWER RESERVE track border. Signed WALTHAM below the 12.

The three-piece case with screwed back covering is ORIGINAL and was made especially for Waltham movement and is in great condition.

In my opinion these types of cases represent some of the best value for money. These metal cased (and sometimes silver) watches were decorated with the highest quality engraving made by case maker’s in particular – KEYSTONE. The detail on these cases is always intricate and well defined and also these were made in relatively low numbers.

The movement comes in a metal open face case, which has a snap on bezel and screwed back covering. The inside of the outer case lid is stamped KEYSTONE – WATCH CASE – J BOSS – 14K – GOLDFILLED and case referent number #7,100,885. Turning the watch over I note that the ENGRAVED screwed back lid is nice and clean.

The case is decorated on the back with an intricately engraved. The rest of the case has ornately carved detailing on the front and back bezels, side.

The manual wind nickel plated movement has GENEVA PATTERN, RAISED & SCREWED THREEFOLD in ROSE GOLD CENTER JEWEL CHATON, FOUR RAISED GOLD JEWEL SETTINGS, SCREW-FITTED CHATON in ROSE GOLD for the PALLET FORK, GOLD WHEELS and PRECISION MICROMETER REGULATOR & BLUE BREGUET BALANCE SPRING.

The number of jewels used in watch movements increased over the last 150 years as jewelling grew less expensive and watches grew more accurate. The only bearings that really need to be jeweled in a watch are the ones in the going train - the gear train that transmits force from the mainspring barrel to the balance wheel - since only they are constantly under force from the mainspring. The wheels that turn the hands (the motion work) and the calendar wheels are not under load, while the ones that wind the mainspring (the keyless work) are used very seldom, so they do not wear significantly. Friction has the greatest effect in the wheels that move the fastest, so they benefit most from jewelling. So the first mechanism to be jeweled in watches was the balance wheel pivots, followed by the escapement. As more jeweled bearings were added, they were applied to slower moving wheels, and jewelling progressed up the going train toward the barrel. A 17 jewel watch has every bearing from the balance wheel to the mainspring barrel jeweled, so it was considered a 'fully jeweled' watch. In quality watches, to minimize positional error, capstones were added to the lever and escape wheel bearings, making 21 jewels. Even the mainspring barrel arbor was sometimes jeweled, making the total 23.

To enhance the power coming through the train, the center wheel is provided with a chaton jewel, which is mounted in rosé gold and is screwed threefold. Only jeweled holes minimize reliably the friction due to enormous driving power of the mainspring and consequently the going barrel. The screwed chaton allows the precise adjustment of the wheel and the quick change of the bearing jewel if necessary. The further wheel arbors are protected by jewels.

The movement is signed WALTHAM,MASS – U.S.A. –ADJUSTED – 6 POSITIONS – 23 JEWELS – 26,128,533. The winding wheels are mounted clearly visible on the barrel plate and signed LOSSIER INNER TERMINAL HAIR SPRING.

This beautiful pocket watch has the original WALTHAM movement in an excellent status which was very well saved, considering age of this watch. Mechanism has been recently serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping great, accurate time.

Diameter (with crown):      55.00 mm
Diameter (without crown): 51.00 mm
Watch crystal diameter:     43.00 mm
Thickness:                         14.00 mm

This very fine watch winds and sets very smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time.

Because of the vintage nature of the watch I cannot guarantee its absolute time keeping accuracy even if they are in good running condition and in some rare occasions may require additional adjustment.
