The case has MINERAL glasses on the front and back side.

Peeking inside via the glass lid I find a clean, high-grade manual wind nickel finished lever escapement mechanism with BLUE STEEL SCREWS, CIRCLE DAMASKEENING, GENEVA PATTERN, MASSIVE BARREL PLATE (3/4), TWO RAISED & SCREWED in GOLD JEWEL SETTINGS, TWO SCREWED in GOLD JEWEL SETTINGS, MOSELEY MICROMETER REGULATOR & BLUE BREGUET BALANCE SPRING.

3/4 Plates were commonly used when manufacturing movement sizes 16s and smaller, offering the ability to produce a watch much thinner when compared to a full plate watch. The balance cock and the top plate were adjacent and flush, requiring a cutout in the top plate of the movement. Many times, the 3/4 plate is split into two parts.

Identification: The top plate has about 1/4 cut around the balance, which is flush with the top plate.

The regulator is used to adjust the balance wheel's rate of oscillation in order to improve accuracy of the watch. Several varieties of watch regulators were used in movement designs, most of which were patented, often called "Patent Regulators". The best regulators offer extreme precision while adjusting the rate of oscillation. A patent regulator was often an indicator of quality.

The number of jewels used in watch movements increased over the last 150 years as jewelling grew less expensive and watches grew more accurate. The only bearings that really need to be jeweled in a watch are the ones in the going train - the gear train that transmits force from the mainspring barrel to the balance wheel - since only they are constantly under force from the mainspring. The wheels that turn the hands (the motion work) and the calendar wheels are not under load, while the ones that wind the mainspring (the keyless work) are used very seldom, so they do not wear significantly. Friction has the greatest effect in the wheels that move the fastest, so they benefit most from jewelling. So the first mechanism to be jeweled in watches was the balance wheel pivots, followed by the escapement. As more jeweled bearings were added, they were applied to slower moving wheels, and jewelling progressed up the going train toward the barrel. A 17 jewel watch has every bearing from the balance wheel to the mainspring barrel jeweled, so it was considered a 'fully jeweled' watch.

There is signed ELGIN NATL WATCH Co – U.S.A. – ADJUSTED – 17 JEWELS. Also is signed the movement serial number #15.542.864. This serial number dates this watch to 1911 as per published production numbers. The movement has #12S size and #384 Caliber.

This beautiful wristwatch has the ORIGINAL ELGIN WATCH Co movement in an excellent status which was very well saved, considering age of this watch, but some of the wearable parts on the movement might be replaced, and custom made to fit, since it is close to impossible to find original parts. Mechanism has been recently serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping great, accurate time.

This is a “NAIL SET” watch so you don’t pull the crown out to set the time. Instead, you press the little button near the crown IN and then move the crown to set the hands, releasing the button once you’re finished. It’s easy, so don’t worry about getting the hang of it!

It comes complete with a new 22mm black alligator style high quality genuine leather strap with matching gold Stainless Steel buckle for a most excellent look.

Diameter (with crown):      52.00 mm
Diameter (without crown): 45.00 mm

This cleaned, oiled and regulated antique watch winds and sets very smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time.
